Fuck This I'm Ready to Be a TV Star
Hey BadAss Actor!
What makes Insecure such a unique show?
If you don't know the answer, then when you get the audition, you're probably not going to book it.
Why is that?
Because every writer has a voice, a particular way that they see the world.
If you were auditioning for a play, would you use language the same way for a Eugene O'Neil play as you would for an August Wilson play?
I hope not...in the same way, the way you use language, humor, how you create the psychology of a character is based on the show's writers and creators. Watch Issa Rae's work, what is the key to her character's voice?
And please don't be lame and say it's because she cusses and code switches. That's so non specific...it sounds like a the kind of surfacey stereotyping that we spent hours complaining about as actors of color ....it doesn't do justice to what Issa has uniquely created...
Her characters expect to win, expect to be the smartest person in the room, expect that their work and effort will be recognized and if it's not, then it must be something they are doing that they have the power to change...
A person's whose destiny lies completely in their own hands and who never expects to hear the word no because of the color of their skin. They are smarter, badder and privileged with Ivy League educations and a thorough command of the vernacular which they use like intellectual whips to stay 3 steps ahead of their opponent.
There's structure in the writing and speed in the way characters create an argument and make no mistake...each character always has a high stake argument behind every word that drops out of their mouths.
TV has never seen anything like it and if, you the actor cannot think as fast as Issa's characters and drive the argument from the same place of ferocious intellect, then you will not get the job....because that is the tone of the show....
Check out this video which will only be available for the next 24 hours on how to identify the tone of a show and how to make acting choices that get you the job and not just a thank you on your way out the door.
That's all I got...
