Are theaters the only places where I can do a Solo Show? Well, that's a brilliant question Let's start with figuring out exactly what a solo show is.
What is a solo show?
A solo show is one person telling a story. That's it. ▪The Moth ▪Open Mic Poetry Slams ▪Reading passages from your book aloud at bookstores ▪Stand Up Comedy driven by detailed, high stakes storytelling ▪Sermons (yes, that's right) Sunday afternoon when you're sitting in the audience, "amen-ing" your pastor, that too is a solo show that draws you in because the stakes are high and hopefully the truth will set you free We're drawn to the solo form because it's so embedded in our culture. She who owns the story is who gets to tell it. The power of writing your story is that you get to control what part of your humanity you want to remember, portray, celebrate and share. So, reading your memoir aloud can be a solo show Telling a story at the Moth can be a solo show Show and Tell in kindergarten can be a solo show All that's required is that you learn how to tell a compelling story that draws in your listeners and helps them see the world from a different point of view. That's it...that's all a solo show is, so it can take many forms. What is universal is that you have to learn solid story structure in order to tell and write a compelling story that someone will want to pay to see. |
