The Birth of the Emotional Type Technique
I wanted to write myself into existence.
By April Yvette Thompson
I did all the right things.
When I graduated from Rutgers with an MFA in acting, there were two things I was desperate to have: a husband and a film career.
I revised strategies. I worked. And when the success finally came, something was still missing.
My goals were not in alignment with my heart’s desire.
What did I actually want to feel?
A sense of safety. Love that nurtures my differences and celebrates them. A place where my vulnerability is seen, heard, and supported.
To travel the world in search of beauty. To teach people to become more than they imagined. And freedom.
Books, archetypes, goddesses, and Orishas
My guides were books about women who remade themselves—and the stories my great-grandparents passed down to me.
I began to recognize recurring emotional themes: the lessons, conflicts, and strategies that kept shaping my life.
Finding what resides between what you say you want and what you actually need.
That search became the beginning of the Emotional Type Technique.
From personal discovery to the work
I brought together my training as an actor, my life as a writer, and my study of emotional patterns to create a process for understanding what drives us—and the characters we play.
Discover what drives you.
