i used to watch movies to get permission to dream...watching "Juanita" starring my north star, Alfre Woodard about a woman who gets on a bus to get away from her life to find herself; i realize i am living the life that people dream & write books & screenplays about.... when america became too dangerous for my spirit, i hopped on a plane to switzerland, taught a storytelling workshop in a castle in Lausanne and then flew to Morocco and spent a month seeing the country. 8 months later, I was living in Marrakech. 3 years & 6 foster cats later, I was moving back to the states to get married to the love of my life... instead of returning to "I Do, " I returned to an Amurica crashing & burning in the flames of delusion & denial. as we all woke up, i learned that i had nothing to return to i rented a car & started driving. from Florida to Alabama to New Orleans to Austin; i drove, cried, sang outloud , met up w/college troublemakers to sit in parks w/masks on & tell each other stories abt the adventures we'd lived, cancers we conquered, trips to faraway places where we could dream. along the way, i saw the ocean in Galveston, survived 3 hurricanes, bought a convertible VW Beetle from a car automaton in Houston & sped through a few Sundown towns. driving w/the drop top down, audible on blast, getting lost & addicted to ice lattes, i sailed into the big open skies of New Mexico. I'm resting here to see if I take root. all my life I wanted to be an actor like Alfre: grounded, bold, unpredictable, expansive and true. as i watch her in "Juanita," i realized that though i may not have had her career, perhaps i'm actually living out some of the same dreams... & maybe, just maybe that may actually be enuf...
