So, here's the positive side of this tax bill. Finally, finally, my fellow artists who have been led to believe that this was some karmically, merit driven business we're in are waking up to the coffee...that this is a capitalist empire we live in...driven by business and the notion we're taught in school that it's not a business is not only no longer serving us. It's hampering our development as artists and ensuring that real storytellers with real talent never see the light of day....
While folks less talented with business saavy are making a killing....that cannot go on... The simple skinny of this bill is that if you started making your own work and made a profit from self-producing ( like producing 3 or 4 readings a year), which is essentially what this new tax bill is forcing us to do if we don't want to take huge hits or have to invest $10K in creating a corp structure, then paying someone to do two sets of taxes each year... Self-produce...this is a business... not a talent factory... Its a business.... And if true storytellers are to survive...this mantra needs to sound like liberation, not terror.... The first time I produced one of my plays and got three different checks: writer, performer and producer in one week. A light came on.... This is freedom...not drudgery. Drudgery is going out in the freezing rain and snow on a two hour subway ride with delays after spending 2-4 hours reading a script and preparing an audition to get to the audition, wait another hour then audition never hear back after you've spent 5-10 hours of your valuable time preparing for it... you never get that time back and you never get those hours back And you give up this kind of time more often than you actually book a job... Freedom or Drudgery What if we started treating our time like money... and our Freedom like the air we breathe and our talent like an invaluable treasure... what might change in our realities....
