it's very privileged and naive to think that a producer's concern with your social media following is ridiculous and should affect ur castability...
if u have a following, people r more likely to watch u on tv, or buy a tix to a play...its business...artists cant really afford to think business concerns are beneath them. Why should someone invest millions of dollars on a play that will never make its money back so u can act in it for art's sake or why should someone pay you $30,000 an episode and not be concerned with whether or not someone will tune in to watch u... artists unconcerned with the business of art should be prepared to not work or work for free...bec showbusiness is a very expensive first world diversion while the rest of the country and world is struggling to keep a roof over their heads...or feed their families... artists with social media following are business people who've demonstated with their following that they can bring an audience to a project...a paying audience... that's not beneath you, that's an artist being a hardworking business person who values their artistry enuf to invest in it like a business... sorry our training programs took our money and taught us there was something honorable abt starving and dishonorable abt treating the industry like the corporation that it is...but its time to let that paradigm go bec it's no longer serving us... building a brand or following for the brillant work you have to share is an honorable part of your job and you should be paid well for it... ----april yvette thompson #BadAssActorShit
