How do you know you're ready to write a solo show?

• U have a journal, notes, slips of paper everywhere with ideas for a book, a screenplay, a solo show, a poem, a sermon on the mount (yes, sermons are solo shows).  


• U are the keeper of stories and memory,
• u remind us of our shared humanity,
• flaws and moments where we reach
• for light in spite of ourselves


• U come from a long line of people who tells stories at holidays.  
• Stories so scandalously vivid that no one bothers to turn on the tv…
• Fuck Toy Story because u, ur nana &  ur uncles got drama at their fingertips


• U are the person who is such a natural storyteller that you don’t even realize it’s a gift


• Do u know what separates u from other great storytellers whose work has been produced? 

Hard work
Focus & 
Committment

That’s it.  

Nothing more.

Because born storytellers are gifted with our collective history and cherish it.  They remember the details, the feelings, the heartbreak of being fully human.

To make a living doing it simply requires FOCUS.

That’s the one thing I hear from actors, writers, singers, storytellers: focus and time are a problem.  But that's bullshit because focus is a choice.  

Everything you refuse to change is a choice. 

They don’t focus because they don’t realize they have a gift and once they do,
​they don’t believe in its value.
 
But for those of us who know and are ready, I’ve got some ideas about structure, Inciting Incident, character psychological gesture, story forms from well-made multi-character play, to long form monologue to short form well-made monologues and a lot more.

All that’s required is the determination to focus, commitment and the courage to prioritize your gift.
