My 1st off broadway credit 🌀The Women’s Project in “The Antigone Project” written, produced, directed & starring women. This was an epic first & nothing short of a dream come true bec I had the opportunity to work w/3 artists I deeply admired & whose work I quietly followed for yrs bec it was in alignment w/my deepest core values: Playwrights Lynn Nottage, Tanya Barfield & director, Liesl Tommy. & one rainy night, a director I had been writing to since college finally made it out to one of my performances. I was dreadful in one of her workshops at NYSF so I wanted to redeem myself At the end of the show, Seret Scott stood outside in the rain to tell me: “You did good, kiddo” I coulda died happy in that moment. I then went on to work w/Seret in the most challenging leads of my career. W/her quiet insistence, I wrote my first solo show. She texted me from Japan at 3 am once “U better be writing, kid & stop running ‘roun doing other peoples work...ga’nite.” She forced me to focus on what I had to say to the world through my writing & the roles I chose to play. I stayed the course as she continued to check in & keep me accountable. Being a working actor is abt so much more than giving a good audition. It’s abt being a master of ur craft which includes knowing the business: Who gets produced & why? Where did they study? What kind of work do they specialize in? What are the common lessons in their work? It’s not just abt getting the part, it’s abt ESTABLISHING THE REASON WHY U WANT THE PART. Explore these questions in ur morning pages: Look at the trajectory of the roles uv played. What struggles do the characters share? What’s their fatal flaw? What scripts are u drawn to & why? What are the recurring emotional themes in the work? Until u identify why u want to act or write, the work will continue to elude u bec ur purpose is not clear & specific. Why are u a storyteller & what life lesson were u put here to learn & teach others? That’s the key to being a working actor/writer/storyteller. I’d love to hear what u discover.
