Telling your story teaches you that what other people think about you is none of your business.3/1/2023 What other people think of you is none of your business....When you get comfortable saying out loud what you've never said before in front of an audience who will give you their undivided attention, it is incredibly powerful. Finally being seen while also being accepted and heard without judgement is life changing. It allows you be to sort through that story and in the telling, you can make changes. You make changes by reframing what actually happened.
For example, assuming: "I was a total loser in the Italian contest and I was this and I was that" is an assumption, not necessarily the truth. Go back and re-tell that story because you're never as good as you think you are but you never is bad as you think you are either. When you retell the story of something that happened to you in front of an audience, transcribe it and have someone else read that transcription out loud, it allows you a kind of distance. It allows you to hear the story almost as if it's another person's point of view. It gives you perspective and a kind of gentleness we don't necessarily allow ourselves. It's amazing how much we're in our heads about what is received and how we're understood. Telling your story orally allows you to put the brakes on downshift, change direction and consider that maybe what you though happened is not reality. Telling your story gives you the opportunity to edit all those places where you're really hard on yourself and realize that nobody else is receiving that hard critique of your. Nobody else is experiencing those loud voices of disdain you may have inherited from others. That hard critique of you is what needs unpacking. You're the editor of your life, your story. You don't have to get it right. Trying to get writing perfect is like trying to get life perfect. Telling your story teaches you that what other people think about you is none of your business.
